jay-home-close

I am a yoga teacher and writer who wears my heart on my sleeve and endeavors to embrace where I am rather than focus on how evolved I’d like to be.

I’ve received just as much healing and insight from punching the shit out of life-sized dummies and hiking off into the woods for days on end as I have from daily down dogs and sitting in meditation.

The writings and teachings you’ll find here come from my personal experience. I offer candid stories about becoming more fully human and tested tips for teaching yoga with integrity. (I happen to feel those two things are inseparable.)

I’ve done everything from nude modeling for art classes to corporate facilitation to guiding vision fasts in the desert.  The common theme has been the desire to create candid, embodied and life-changing connections with people.

The only (and I mean only) constant since I was 19 has been teaching yoga. I’ve come to know and be myself more fully through this practice, and am grateful for (and daunted by) the ways that it demands a stunning amount of presence and offers such vitality and richness to living.

For as much as I love teaching, I equally enjoy being a student. I feel honored to have studied regularly with yoga master Julie Gudmestad here in my (former) hometown of Portland, Oregon, and to have called many great and humble people from all different traditions and backgrounds my teachers over the years. Currently the mountains in my new hometown of Ojai, California are my source of connection, wisdom and joy.

I’m also proud to say I approach learning as creatively and organically as I approach teaching, so my undergraduate degree from The College of William and Mary in Psychosocial Health and Human Movement (yep, I designed that one myself) and my graduate degree from Prescott College in Integral Transformative Education inform my work on a daily basis.

I try to bring all of myself to my teaching, which means I laugh a lot, swear a little, and cry when I feel moved. It also means I share my geeky fascination with anatomy and the human body, my belief in the importance of having a solid connection to inner guidance, my love for poetry, and my passion for emotional, energetic and spiritual connection.

So thanks for coming to visit my site. I look forward to getting to know you better.
